Job Description:

Business Development provides a unique opportunity to apply commercial deal leadership skills from origination through deal delivery. Crude Business Development is responsible for leading some of the more complex multi-stakeholder Shell Trading deals both to grow the third party Trading business and by representing Trading within major Shell Group projects.

What is the role?

To support the growth of Crude Trading in North America we need someone who can successfully and efficiently originate, develop and execute new refinery supply, producer offtake and logistics agreements.

We need you to support integrated value capture with Upstream and Downstream and support the development of Trading strategy for North America Crude Trading.

To achieve these aims it is necessary to maximize third party and cross-business relationships for the benefit of Trading and Group. The team therefore works closely with Products Trading, Shell Upstream , Downstream Strategy & Portfolio.

We need you to:

Originate, develop and implement new commercial opportunities and lead project teams driving for efficient and successful delivery/implementation.
Continue to support traders in the post implementation period, as necessary with relationship and contract management.
Develop and maintain key Trading and Industry relationships (both outside and within Shell).
Lead and contribute to developing desk business strategies and link strategy to business development and origination priorities.
Create innovative solutions (including structured financing) to meet counterparty requirements whilst maximizing the value of tradable options and taking due account of all risks including credit, price risk, HSSE and Group reputation.
Act as Trading & Supply (T&S) representative for Crude and Condensate in cross business forums to ensure that Integrated Value is identified and realized to enhance the overall end-to-end performance of the Group.
Provide strategic input on behalf of Trading into wider Group projects.
Work with appropriate functions to obtain necessary corporate approvals including New Business Proposals and Group Investment Proposals.
The number of live Crude Business Development projects within the region is typically greater than 50 at any given time.
Individual deals (refinery supply, producer offtake, logistics commitments) may include working capital, lease and credit commitments (headline size commitment) in excess of $500M.
Be familiar with the considerable level of complexity of the projects to be developed (due to embedded hedging & financing requirements within contracts and the significant number of stakeholders within and outside of Trading).
Have a high degree of patience as it is not unusual for some projects to have development lifetimes of 6 months to 2 years to bring to completion, requiring regular referral to stakeholders and the need to ensure corporate memory is maintained throughout execution.

What do we need from you?

Proven track-record in material and complex Origination in the areas of Refining and Crude Production with an established industry network.
First class origination, networking, and communication skills, identifying opportunities and developing key external relationships.
Experience of leading cross-functional project teams including Finance, Legal, Operations, Shipping, Tax, Supply, Third Party advisers as well as the Trading desks.
Business Development experience with existing industry contacts is essential (in all stages of the deal funnel) including a demonstrated ability to originate, negotiate and close complex commercial transactions.
Experience in crude oil or products trading.
Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication and influencing abilities.
Proven ability to build strong working relationships with key external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to build support and consensus across organizational interfaces.
Strong evidence of commercial acumen and 3rd party deal delivery.
